Isabelle Underwood/Wasco, Beaded Moccasins

$350.00

Born around 1830, Ellen Underwood on the right, her daughter Mary, top, born around 1850, and on the left Isabelle born around 1850, were Cascade Indian living along the Columbia River. Isabelle and Mary were raised traditionally with other tribal members but eventually Isabelle was placed in a boarding school in Vancouver, Washington. While there she learned embroidery. Her beadwork would become influenced by embroidery patterns, magazines, and apple orchard labels. All of the women created beadwork and their work can be found in the Maryhill Museum Collection. The next photo is a display of some of the bags and baskets made by members of the Underwood family, circa 1911.

Moccasins were created by Isabelle Underwood, circa 1930 contour beading, a few beads missing.
